Science Camp 2010

Camp STAR 2010! This year we had a total of 70 students from ten different schools throughout the country for five days of science camp fun at Gwangwa. This is the second year for our mini-camp and it was a success thanks to all of the other volunteers who gave up part of their holiday to help out and teach. All of the students stayed at my school in the two hostels we are currently using. Throughout the week they participated in MSCE (Malawi Senior Certificate Examination) prep classes in the subject areas of Math, Biology and Physical Science. Since my school has a great laboratory this was a wonderful chance to utilize that resource and do lots of practical work with the students.

This year's classes included: computers, trigonometry, plants and biology practical, electrical components, genetics, molarity and titrations, pendulums, statistics, coordination, rates of reaction, imunnity and HIV education. We also had a wide range of other educational activities throughout week such as a career panel, goat dissection, composting, quiz bowl competition, film shows and sessions on study skill and goal setting. Of course, we ended the week with more fun including a disco and variety show.

Here are a few pictures from the week!
